A rare-feeling astrological setup is drawing attention this week as the year’s second and final solar eclipse is set for 12 August, while Sawan Shivratri falls a day earlier on 11 August. According to Indian media reports and eclipse calendars, the eclipse will not be visible from India, which means the traditional Sutak period does not apply there. Even so, the coincidence of the eclipse with Bhadra on the eve of Shivratri has prompted astrologers to flag the period as especially noteworthy.
The eclipse is expected to occur in Cancer and Ashlesha Nakshatra, with astrology sites noting that it will be a total solar eclipse in a narrow band across parts of the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, Spain and a small part of Portugal, while a partial eclipse will be seen across a much wider area of Europe, North America and north-west Africa. Reports from Hindu Blog and other eclipse guides also say temples in India are not expected to close for Sutak-related observances because the eclipse will not be visible there.
Astrologers are paying particular attention to Bhadra on 11 August, which is said to run from 5.48am to 3.22pm. Because the Moon will be in Cancer, the Bhadra is described as applying on earth, a condition traditionally regarded as inauspicious. The overlap with the eve of the eclipse is being treated as a striking combination, even if, as with most astrological warnings, the impact is a matter of belief rather than science.
Among the signs said to feel the strongest effects, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius are being highlighted. For Leo, the eclipse is linked with the 12th house, a sector associated in astrology with spending and loss, so attention to budgets is being advised. For Sagittarius, the 8th house is said to be activated, which astrologers connect with disruption and sudden setbacks. For Aquarius, the 6th house is under focus, with warnings to stay alert to workplace conflict, rivals and health concerns. The common thread in all three readings is the same: slow down, avoid rash decisions and keep emotions in check.
